How to build a website for free - Part 1July 8th 2019
If you're just starting out in online marketing or you just need something quick and simple, then this post will show you how you can build a basic website for free and a cheap custom domain.
These days it's not hard to build a website. Some companies don't even have a website and direct traffic to their Facebook page or other digital medium. Although this could work for some entrepreneurs, not having a website can hurt your business. It's always better to have something that you own rather than completely relying on platforms you don't control. We've seen businesses almost disappear overnight because either they violated some obscure terms of services or bad actors unethically report their accounts without proper cause.
With that being said, lets jump right in!
Grab yourself a domain at Namesilo.com
I've personally been using Namesilo for about 7 years and they have always been very reliable. Some of the reasons why I use Namesilo is because they include WHOIS Privacy, Email Forwarding, Domain Defender Protection, Custom WHOIS Records and DNS Management completely free. Some other domains name providers charge a premium price for these features.
Not only are these features free but their prices are generally cheaper then some of the bigger companies like Godaddy. I've used Godaddy in the past and purchased a domain for one year just for them to double the price to renew or to transfer which I thought was a total rip off. So be aware!
After you secure a domain name let's pause here and sign up for our hosting.
Head on over to Freehosting.com and click on sign up.
After that you'll see a screen to select your hosting plan. Click on Order Now under free hosting. Here is what is included:
- 10 GB of disk space
- Unlimited bandwidth
- 1 hosted website
- 1 e-mail account
- 1 MySQL database
- No subdomains
- No domain aliases
Note: Hosting on free servers PHP mail() and SSL are not included.
After this make sure you select I will use my existing domain and update my nameservers and enter your new domain. Nameservers are how you connect domains to your appropriate server. This will give us the flexiblity to connect your domain on NameSilo and your server on FreeHosting. If you want a technical deep dive into this concept you can learn more about NameServers.
Continue to the next screen and checkout.
After you have registerd for your free hosting account and picked a domain, go ahead and visit Wordpress.org/download to download the latest version to upload onto your hosting provider. If you don't know by now what Wordpress is, it's an open source Content Management System (CMS) to manage the content on your site without coding or setting up databases. It's super easy to use and a standard in the online industry.
Just to be clear, don't get confused by Wordpress.com and Wordpress.org. The former is their business solution that is hosted on their servers. It's also free to use but comes with limitations and you can't change your domain unless you upgrade to a paid plan.
Once you have the zip file you downloaded go back to your hosting account and navigate to your Client Area and click Services.
It should look something like this
In Part 2 of this post I'll show you how to connect your domain to your account and complete your Wordpress installation. As a bonus I'll also show you how to customize your site without buying any expensive themes.
